PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the occupied volume and projected area of a starter, to improve layout property in an engine room, and to reduce fluctuation of an electric source terminal caused by vibration of a vehicle. SOLUTION: This starter 1 is so configured that an idle gear 15 engaged with the ring gear of an engine by being axially moved is added to a so-called single axle type engine starter with a magnet switch portion 4 arranged coaxially with a drive shaft 32. The electric source terminal 44 for electric source supply is arranged within an area X surrounded by the across-the-width dimension B of the engine mounting surface 24a of a gear cover 24 and a dimension H from the engine mounting surface 24a to the radial end of a motor housing 21.
