The system (1) has a regeneratable cleaning device (6), and a solar thermal heater (16) for heating a nitrogen product to a regenerating temperature of the cleaning device. A flushing gas pipeline (17) and a nitrogen discharge (18) are provided for supplying the heated product as washing liquid to the cleaning device. A heat storage device stores thermal energy of the heated nitrogen product. A raw air cleaning device (6) comprises an adsorbent that is regenerated by flushing with flushing gas. A cold box (2) cools raw air generated by the cleaning device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an air separation system.
