Disclosed is a method for producing a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a reduced irreversible capacity and excellent charge/discharge efficiency, said negative electrode material being most suitable for use in high-current input/output nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries typified by a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Also disclosed is a negative electrode material obtained by the production method. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery from a petroleum pitch material, said method comprising a tar removal step wherein an infusibilized pitch having an oxygen content of 5-20 wt% is heated to a temperature of 480-700°C, while flowing an inert gas at a space velocity of 0-120 (min-1).
