Provided are lithium secondary batteries with capacity, durability and other characteristics that are improved compared to the past. The plate-shaped particles or films for the positive electrode active material of lithium rechargeable batteries have a rock salt structure, and the faces where the lithium ions enter and exit are oriented to be parallel to the plate surfaces, that are the surfaces orthogonal to the thickness direction, to be exposed at said plate surfaces. Multiple layers are layered in said thickness direction and said layers have differing crystal axes for plate surface directions that are perpendicular to said thickness direction while having the same crystal axis for said thickness direction.
