831,390. Chain tensioning. PERKINS Ltd., F., and MORTON, F. L. Feb. 13, 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6203/56. Class 80 (1). A slidable spring-loaded chain-tensioning sprocket 4, particularly for an engine timing chain 1, is rotatable on a slotted member 6 which slides on a fixed post 9 under the influence of a spring 13 and is held against return movement by two or more pairs of spring-loaded multi-toothed pawls 14, 15 slidably housed in the fixed post 9 and engaging ratchet plates 10 on the member 6, the adjacent pawl pairs being staggered in relation to the ratchet teeth to increase the fineness of adjustment. To increase further the fineness of adjustment the two pawls in each pair may be caused to engage successively, rather than simultaneously, by offsetting either the ratchet plates or the pawls.
