Continuous process for the preparation of racemic or optically active menthol in a pure and enriched form, comprises distillative separation of racemic or optically active menthol from a material mixture containing racemic or optically active menthol and its diastereomer, where the distillative separation process takes place in a partition column with 50-300 theoretical separation steps and one or more side exhaust position, in an absolute working pressure of 5-500 mbar.
