A power saving device 350 for a computer comprising a connection, e.g. USB cable, for connecting the device to a computer, a sensor 354 configured to detect the presence of a computer user in a predetermined vicinity of the device 350, and a controller configured to indicate to the computer when the user is no longer within the predetermined vicinity and thereby cause the computer to enter a power saving standby state. The sensor 354 may be a passive infrared (PIR) sensor or a radio frequency identification (RFID) sensor (650 fig.7), which detects the presence or absence of a transponder (660 fig.7) carried by a user. Preferably, when a user returns to the vicinity of the device 350, the device 350 re-awakens the computer from the power saving state and may test whether the user is authorized to use the computer, e.g. by entry of a password or biometric identification.
