PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for providing middleware for compatibility guarantee of a digital cable broadcast receiving device are provided to download a middleware environment and application programs that a broadcast service provider provides and re-install them. CONSTITUTION: An image information generating unit(220) generates OCAP(OpenCable Application Platform) image information including information related to OCAP middleware. A transmitting unit(230) transmits the OCAP image information to a cable broadcast receiver. A receiving unit(210) receives a change request message of the OCAP middleware. An authentication controller(240) determines whether the cable broadcast receiver is authenticated based on the change request message of the OCAP middleware. When the cable broadcast receiver is authenticated, the authentication controller provides the OCAP middleware to the cable broadcast receiver.
