PURPOSE: An optical disc recording capacity calculation apparatus and method are provided to play an optical disc by adjusting focusing and tracking servo gains according to the calculated recording capacity and to play an optical disc with a non-standard high capacity. CONSTITUTION: An optical disc recording capacity calculation method comprises next steps. The number of tracks is detected in a predetermined section of length in case an optical disc is inserted(S300). The track interval of the optical disc is calculated based on the number of tracks detected of the optical disc(S310). The recording capacity of the optical disc is decided based on the calculated track interval of the optical disc(S320). Focusing and tracking servo gains are adjusted depending to the decision result(S330). The focusing and tracking servo gains are adjusted to a preset gain control value corresponding to the optical disc recording capacity.
