PURPOSE: An optical pickup device and a control method thereof are provided to enhance the precision of a control operation by preventing the cancellation of a phase difference by enabling some sectors of first and second light receiving elements to be selectively output. CONSTITUTION: An optical pickup device is composed of a light source(70), a light receiving device(90), a diffraction element, and an output unit. The light receiving device comprises a main light receiving element, first and second auxiliary light receiving elements and a plurality of sectors. The main light receiving element corresponds to a main beam. The first and second auxiliary light receiving elements correspond to sub-beams. The sectors are included in the first and second auxiliary light receiving elements. The output unit individually outputs the signals from all sectors of both auxiliary light receiving elements in a normal output mode. The output unit selects and outputs only some sectors of both auxiliary light receiving elements in a control mode.
