In order to inspect shape abnormality in the profile of an outer circumferential surface of a wire rope, a rope inspection device includes a comb-shaped detection plate including an inspection recess having an inspection edge extending while bending along at least a part of the outer circumference of the substantially circular cross-section of the wire rope and receiving the wire rope while bringing it into close proximity to the inspection edge or in contact therewith; and a support device for supporting the detection plate rotatably while bringing it into close proximity to the wire rope or in contact therewith and releasing the force by permitting rotation of the detection plate when it receives a force from an abnormal part of the wire rope. When an inspection string is stretched across the opening of the inspection recess, the surface which is not in close proximity to the inspection edge or in contact therewith can be inspected.
