845,761. Bags; packaging. BERGHGRACHT, M. Oct. 26, 1956 [Oct. 28, 1955], No. 32793/56. Classes 94(1) and 94(2). A bag is formed from a single unscored blank 1 by folding it round a mandrel 5 moveable about a pivot 6 at right angles to its longitudinal axis to press the blank onto its end after its having been applied to three side faces, the mandrel incorporating suction means to retain the blank. The blank is coated with thermoplastic lacquer and may be of laminated material. The blank 1 is applied to a side face of the horizontal mandrel 5 by a plate 4 which then withdraws, the blank being retained by suction through apertures 7. The mandrel pivots downwards causing plates 15, 151 to wipe the blank against opposite sides, and a plate 16 to fold it onto the mandrel end. Members 17 (only one shown), move down on opposite sides of the mandrel, Fig. 4, to form end folds, and plates 18 rise to wipe the folds against the mandrel sides. These sides are recessed at 11, 11<SP>1</SP> to accommodate the thickness of the end folds. A member 20 rises to fold the blank against the remaining mandrel sides, Fig. 6, and flaps 21, 22 pivot through 180 degrees to complete the bag side folds. These folds are secured by heated presses, Fig. 8 (not shown), and the bag, after impression of closure fold lines on its upper end by means, (not shown), is ejected by pressure air passing a valve 10 in the mandrel end. The closure is initiated by a bar 26 entering cutouts 3, 31 and descending to fold parts 27, 271 beneath outwards, members 29, 291 folding flaps 28, 281 inwards into overlapping relation. The bar remains in place while a heated presser seals the overlap, and then withdraws leaving openings through which the bag may be filled with powder, liquid, or if previously filled, with preservation gas. The parts 27, 271 may be nipped between hot sealers, Fig. 15 (not shown), then turned by folders 33, 331 onto the bag top. |
