Disclosed herein are analogs of clozapine of formula (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts, esters, and amides thereof, wherein the variables shown in formula (I) are as defined in the specification; methods of synthesizing the analogs; and methods of using the analogs for treating neuorpsychiatric disorders. In some embodiments, the analogs are amino substituted diaryl[a,d]cycloheptenes.
