Crystalline and amorphous sodium atorvastatin

Disclosed is a crystalline sodium atorvastatin [R-(R*, R*]-2-(fluorophenyl)-beta,delta-dihydroxy-5-(1-methylethyl)-3-phenyl-4-[(phenylamino)carbonyl]-1H-pyrrole-1-heptanoic acid salt which exhibits an X-ray diffraction pattern as defined in the specification. Also disclosed is a method to prepare said crystalline form, a composition comprising said crystalline form and the use of said crystalline form for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of a disease which is prevented, ameliorated or eliminated by the administration of a lipid regulating agent.
