Propeller for a marine propulsion system

A propeller with adjustable pitch propeller blades for a marine propulsion system comprising a propeller hub with a number of openings with a propeller blade 34 mounted in each opening. Each opening in the propeller hub has a hub surface 158 surrounding the opening. The base 190 of each propeller blade 34 is mounted in the opening in the propeller hub such that the base 190 of the propeller blade 34 engages the hub surface 158 surrounding the opening. Each opening in the propeller hub also contains a mechanical and non-hydraulic mechanism for disengaging the hub surface 158 surrounding the opening from the base 190 of each propeller blade 34 to allow rotation of the propeller base and therefore the propeller blade 34 about an axis transverse to the axis of rotation of the propeller by a pitch adjusting mechanism.
