A gypsum calcining apparatus 10 includes a housing with an open top, a bottom wall 52 and side walls extending from the bottom to the top, a fixture 104 at the top to receive the raw gypsum into the housing, a support floor near the bottom wall to hold the gypsum in the housing, a burner 22 connected to the housing to combust an air/fuel mixture 24, 26 and a serpentine burner exhaust conduit 28 that extends through the housing from the burner and terminates through the support floor. The gasses exhausting the serpentine burner conduit can be injected through the fluidisation grid 54 to form at least part of the fluidisation gas to fluidise the gypsum at the bottom of the housing, the fluidised calcined gypsum spilling through the extraction aperture to be extracted from the housing.
