847,903. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY.' June 18, 1946 [June 12, 1945], No. 18327/46. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor, thorium is subjected to a neutron flux of less than 1 Mev energy to produce first, Pa2333 and then U233 by beta decay which is then fissioned by neutron absorption. The thorium is in the carbonate form, the carbon therein showing the neutrons without absorption. The U233 may be separated from the irradiated thorium by a method of the type described in Specification 30680/45. The thorium carbonate is compressed into a pellet and enclosed in an aluminium container with a helium atmosphere. The containers are inserted in horizontal cooling channels within the reactor graphite moderator and surrounding the uranium core. Specification 817,751 is referred to.
