Disclosed is a titanium material having excellent surface characteristics. Also disclosed is a method for easily producing a titanium material having excellent surface characteristics. Specifically disclosed is a titanium material characterized by being provided with a surface coating which has a multilayer structure composed of at least two layers, namely a surface layer and an inner layer which is in contact with the inner side of the surface layer. This titanium material is also characterized in that the surface layer is made of titanium oxide and has a hardness of 5-20 GPa, and the inner layer contains at least one of titanium carbide and titanium nitride.
