In response to operation of a shutter key (3), a digital camera (1) captures a plurality of successive images each including an image of a subject in accordance with settings, and an image of only a motionless background excluding the subject, using an image capturing unit (8), and then detects changes in pixel between the background image and each of the successively captured images. When the detected pixel changes exceed a threshold, or when the images of the subject in the captured images differ largely, a maximum changing-pixel collection area in each of the captured images different from that in another captured image is determined as an image area to be extracted in the former captured image. Then, the determined image area is extracted from the former captured image (FIG. 3).
