PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress as much as possible an increase in cost and consumption of toner, and to set toner sticking amount as aimed in image stabilization control. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 which forms an image by sticking toner to an image carrier includes: a test image forming means 124 forming a line image TPS for test to perform control of the toner sticking amount on the image carrier 41; a detection sensor 47 detecting the line image for test; a sampling cycle changing means 112 changing a sampling cycle by the detection sensor; a line width detection means 113 detecting line width of a line image based on a change of a detection level in each sampling of the detection sensor; and a toner sticking amount control means 121 setting an image forming condition GJ based on the line width detected by the line width detection means so as to achieve predetermined toner sticking amount when forming a real image.
