<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that has a simple configuration, cleans a rear surface of an intermediate transfer belt without affecting the travel of the intermediate transfer belt during image forming, and provides a stable image quality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an endless intermediate transfer belt tensioned and laid on a plurality of rollers; a deviation adjusting means for adjusting the deviation of the intermediate transfer belt; a rear surface cleaning means that is arranged at a position facing the deviation adjusting means via the intermediate transfer belt and cleans the rear surface of the intermediate transfer belt, and a control means for controlling the position of the deviation adjusting means. The control means controls the movement of the deviation adjusting means so that the rear surface of the intermediate transfer belt abuts on the rear surface cleaning means during cleaning of the rear surface, and the rear surface of the intermediate transfer belt separates from the rear surface cleaning means during non-cleaning of the rear surface.
