<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air vent plug for a bearing excellent in water repellency and oil repellency. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A ventilating member 14 constituting the air vent plug 1 comprises a wire mesh made of a stainless steel, a glass wool, a glass filter, a cloth made of a synthetic fiber and the like. A water repellent and oil repellent layer is formed on the ventilating member 14 by bringing the ventilating member 14 into contact with an acid solution of pH 6 or lower containing a fluorine coupling agent containing silicon, titanium or aluminum, water and a lower alcohol of 1C-6C and further bringing the member 14 into contact with an alkali solution of pH 11-13 containing an alkali metal salt.
