<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively utilize, when recovering heat energy of the exhaust heat discharged from a heat engine by an exhaust heat recovery engine, surplus power generated by the exhaust heat recovery engine while the heat engine is at rest. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The exhaust heat recovery system 10 comprises a Stirling engine 100 that recovers heat energy from the exhaust gas Ex discharged from an internal combustion engine 1, a generator 2 driven by the Stirling engine 100, a storage battery 8 for storing power generated by the generator 2, and a charge and discharge control part 24 that is implemented as a function of an electronic control unit ECU 20 of the engine. While the internal combustion engine 1 is at rest, the charge and discharge control part 24 switches between the charge to the storage battery 8 and the discharge from the storage battery 8 based on the result of comparison between the electric energy generated by the Stirling engine 100 and the electric energy required by auxiliary machines of the vehicle on which the exhaust heat recovery system 10 is mounted.
