PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve document-reading productivity when a document transport speed is common in a plurality of documents; and to improve document-reading flexibility when the document transport speed is determined on a document basis. SOLUTION: When a document transport speed in document reading by a line sensor 58 is common in a plurality of documents in continuously reading the plurality of documents, document reading is started without waiting for an image request signal from an image processor 200 in response to the presence of a free space capable of storing image data in a memory 71; and, when the document transport speed in document reading by the line sensor 58 is determined on a document basis, the document reading is started in response to the image request signal from the image processor 200.
