PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound enabling a 2,3-dihydro-thieno[3,4-b]furan derivative to be produced in a mild condition in high yield, to provide a method for producing the compound, and to provide a method for producing the furan derivative by using the compound. SOLUTION: The new compound is 2-(4-alkoxy-thiophen-3-yl)-ethan-1-ol represented by general formula (1) [wherein, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are each independently hydrogen or a 1-20C hydrocarbon which may have a substituent; and R<SP>5</SP>is 1-10C alkyl which may have a substituent].
