The present invention relates to an image display device that selectively displays a planar image (two-dimensional [2D]) or cubic (three-dimensional [3D]) image, and a backlight unit used in the same. The image display device includes a liquid crystal panel, a primary light guide panel, a primary light source, a secondary light guide panel, and a secondary light source. The primary light guide panel is placed below the liquid crystal panel, and the primary light source is arranged on a lateral surface of the primary light guide plate to illuminate light into the primary light guide plate. The secondary light guide plate is placed below the primary light guide plate, and the secondary light source is arranged on a lateral surface of the secondary light guide plate to illuminate light into the secondary light guide plate. The primary and secondary light sources are configured to be turned on separately. The primary light guide plate is formed to emit the incident light from the primary light source toward the liquid crystal panel in plural linear-beams extended in a vertical direction, and the secondary light guide plate is formed to emit the incident light from the secondary light source toward the liquid crystal panel through the surface-emission over the entire upper surface of the secondary light guide panel. Accordingly, 2D and 3D images can be displayed selectively through a simple structure. |
