<p>936,813. Making longitudinally seamed pipes; welding by fusion. M. R. FERRERUELA. Feb. 3, 1960 [June 5, 1959], No. 3779/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making longitudinally seamed pipes comprises curving a sheet to almost cylindrical form, passing the thus curved sheet through rollers, pulling the tube through a drawing die having, at its outlet end, a longitudinal opening coincident with the gap between the pipe edges, a welding electrode and conduit for the supply of flux material being provided at said opening. A pipe 3 of approximately cylindrical shape formed from a sheet curved in a die or press to bring its longitudinal edges adjacent one another, has two rods 14 welded to its end and joined by a cross-bar 13. A chain 12<SP>1 </SP>is hooked to the cross-bar 13 and to a carriage 12 pulled by a chain 10 driven by a motor 11 to pull the tube 3 through a series of pairs of rolls 4, one roll of each pair being formed with an annular ridge 5 co-operating with an annular groove 6 in the other roll, the rolls 4 serving to correct the curvature of the pipe. From the rolls 4 the pipe 3 is pulled through a drawing die 15 having a longitudinal opening 16 coincident with the longitudinal gap in the pipe, through which opening project a welding electrode 17 and a conduit 18 for the supply of flux material. An adjustable weld backing 19 is held inside the pipe and is cooled by hydraulic fluid from a conduit 24.</p> |
