PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength demultiplexing optical element reflecting light having an optional single wavelength from incident light having a plurality of wavelengths and nearly completely preventing reflection of light of a wavelength of unintended side band. SOLUTION: The wavelength demultiplexing optical element is formed by laminating a wave guide layer 20 and a top layer 10 and has a plurality of projecting stripes provided on the surface of the top layer. The plurality of the projecting stripes are composed of two kinds of a projecting stripe pattern A and a projecting stripe pattern B each having a different stripe width, the sum of a distance P<SB>A</SB>and a distance P<SB>B</SB>which are separated distance between the projecting stripes forms a period P, the stripe width A1 of the projecting stripe pattern A and the stripe width B1 of the projecting stripe pattern B satisfy expression (1), B1=K1×A1 (0.3<K1<0.90), and the distance P<SB>A</SB>and the distance P<SB>B</SB>satisfy expression (II), P<SB>A</SB>=K2a×P and expression (III), P<SB>B</SB>=K2b×P (0.35<K2a<0.65, 0.35<K2b<0.65 and K2a≠K2b).
