<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic combustion control system of a diesel engine which can improve responsiveness of the engine by controlling an operating condition of the engine based on information suitable for operating states, and suppress NOx and smoke to improve exhaust performance, in the diesel engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When an operating state of the engine is a transition operation accompanied by switching of a premixed combustion mode and an ordinary combustion mode, and when a fuel admixture period is within a predetermined range from an ordinary combustion threshold to a premixed combustion threshold, fuel admixture period reference control for calculating indication values of an EGR valve and an intake throttle valve based on the fuel admixture period is performed (S6).
