<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the variation of a phase with a camshaft phase suddenly changed during unlocking after starting, in a variable valve timing apparatus with a lock phase set at a generally middle phase within an adjustable range of the camshaft phase. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Oil filling control for filling oil into the advancing chamber and retarding chamber of the variable valve timing apparatus 18 is performed before shifting from a lock mode to a phase feedback control mode after starting. The control duty of a phase controlling hydraulic control valve 25 is changed so that one of advancing chamber oil filling control for filling oil into the advancing chamber and retarding chamber oil filling control for filling oil into the retarding chamber is performed and the other is subsequently performed while maintaining the control duty of the lock controlling hydraulic control valve 26 into a control duty for maintaining the locked state of a lock pin 58 during a period for performing the oil filling control.
