PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure combustion stability in a transient state by injecting fuel twice a cycle and improving ignitability by multiple ignition. SOLUTION: In this control device, fuel injection in one cycle is divided into twice, multiple ignition in which multiple numbers of ignition are executed during one cycle is executed, ignition timing is retarded, and ignition timing and ignition style of the internal combustion engine are changed according to internal EGR gas quantity, fuel injection quantity of second fuel injection in one cycle, and penetration of spray by the second fuel injection, in the transient state in which operation conditions are changed over from large intake and exhaust valve overlap quantity operation conditions to small intake and exhaust valve overlap quantity operation conditions. Ignitability is, thereby, improved due to formation of stratified air fuel mixture by injecting fuel twice in one cycle and increase of ignition probability by multiple ignition. Consequently, deterioration of combustion stability due to excessive EGR occurring in the transient state is improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
