PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for determining a media codec in an SIP(Session Initiation Protocol) based VoIP network are provided to determine a codec according to a codec priority by transmitting an SDP(Session Description Protocol) provision message through the addition of an identifier which allows the priority for setting codec. CONSTITUTION: An SIP for which a priority for media codec determination is given is determined(504). The information of an SIP entity having the priority for determining the media codec determination is described(508). The SIP message includes the information of the SIP entity having the priority for media codec determination. An SDP is used when describing the information of the SIP entity.
