PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ONU using a compact and economic variable wavelength optical filter where the rotation of a multi-layer film filter is used.

SOLUTION: The ONU includes: the wavelength variable filter (534) having the multi-layer film filter; an optical receiver (536) for photoelectrically converting signal light which transmits the multi-layer film filter; and a wavelength control circuit (540) for detecting an unused reception wavelength, based on the output of the optical receiver, selects the unused reception wavelength as the reception wavelength to be used, and sets the transmission wavelength of an optical transmitter (538) to be the selected wavelength. The wavelength variable filter includes a joint to be joined with a driving circuit (512) for rotating the multi-layer film filter in a removable wavelength setting device (500).
