PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To separately store, in a rewritable nonvolatile memory, abnormality information on an abnormality detected in a period from the completion of attachment to a vehicle to arrival of a prescribed timing and abnormality information on an abnormality detected after this timing, in an electronic control device for vehicles. SOLUTION: An electronic control device conducts a self-diagnosis processing based on a signal from a sensor or the like (S110). Upon detection of an abnormality, the device stores DTC, which is abnormality information of the abnormality, in a first storage area of EEPROM (S150) when the operation mode of the device is a function inspection mode (S143: YES), or in a second storage area of EEPROM (S155) when the operation mode of the device is a normal mode (S143: NO). The function inspection mode is a mode for inspecting a function used in production factories of vehicles or car dealers. The electronic control device is shifted to the function inspection mode in response to a command from an external tool, and then shifted to the normal mode when a condition for shifting to the normal mode is established.
