PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stepping motor capable of improving control characteristics, and to provide a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: In a unipolar type stepping motor, a first exciting coil or a second exciting coil is selected for each predetermined excitation period for exciting so that a rotor comprising a magnetic material is imparted with rotational force. The motor includes a control unit which selects, for excitation, the first excitation coil or the second excitation coil by supplying a plurality of excitation pulse currents of a period shorter than the excitation period to both of the first excitation coil and the second excitation coil while adjusting a duty ratio of the excitation pulse currents occupying the excitation period of the first excitation coil and the second excitation coil.
