PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-molecular weight and high-purity polyalkylene glycol derivative for pharmaceutical usage. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyalkylene glycol derivative of formula (X): R-(OA)<SB>n</SB>OH includes the following processes: (process (A)) an alkali catalyst is added to a compound of formula (Y): R-OH; (Process (B)) alkylene oxide is allowed to react at 50-130°C until n is 5-500 to obtain the polyalkylene glycol derivative; (Process (C)) the derivative of the process (B) is diluted with a hydrocarbon base solvent and the residual water content is azeotropically removed; and (Process (D)) the derivative of the process (B) is moreover allowed to react until n is 600-2,000.
