A control signal to control ink discharge from a printhead is generated. Urgency of A/D conversion of a detection signal is generated in accordance with a position represented by a signal output from an encoder. Upon determining based on the urgency to perform A/D conversion, control signal generation stops. Upon determining that a printing operation is not being performed, control is executed to A/D convert the detection signal. However, upon determining that the printing operation is being performed, control is executed to perform A/D conversion after the end of the printing operation. The stopped control signal generation is immediately resumed if it is determined that the A/D conversion has ended. However, upon determining that the A/D conversion has not ended, control signal generation is resumed after the end of the A/D conversion.
