The method involves detecting an activation code in franking information, and transmitting the activation code to an activation device (104). The franking information is characterized as valid franking information by the activation device based on the reception of the activation code in a database (105). The database is used during the checking of the validity of a franking comment (101) comprising the franking information, where the franking comment has a data carrier i.e. radio frequency identification-tag, that is read by a mobile communication terminal (102) e.g. mobile phone. An independent claim is also included for a system for franking a postal item.
