<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a highly reliable counting function in the case of counting the number of steel bars from the photographic image of one end face of the arbitrary bundle of banded bar steels by reducing a missing rate with respect to bar steels banded in such a state that an end face is non-uniform to an axial direction. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Even when one end face of the arbitrary bundle of banded bar steels has uniformity due to the deviation (irregularity of end face) of the axial direction of the banded bar steels PA, one end face of all the bar steels PA is irradiated with irradiation rays of light with respect to the bar steels banded in such a state that the end face has non-uniformity in the axial direction. Thus, it is possible to acquire the image of the end face of the bar steels having an area determined as the bar steels with respect to the bar steels banded in such a state that the end face has non-uniformity in the axial direction by placing an image pickup camera at a position extended by an optical path extending means.
