PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately perform focusing by preventing focusing from being performed based on a focus evaluated value influenced by a subject included in a focus detection area, which is not intended by a photographer. SOLUTION: A focus detector includes: a first focus detection means 9 detecting first focus detection information showing a focused state of an optical system 1 with respect to a first detection area set in an image plane by the optical system 1; a second focus detection means 6 detecting second focus detection information showing the focused state of the optical system 1 with respect to a second detection area set in a range including the first detection area in the image plane in a method different from that of the first focus detection means 9; and a determination means 9 determining whether or not to focus the optical system 1 according to the first focus detection information based on the first focus detection information and the second focus detection information.
