PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent mechanical interlock from being generated, when starting, caused by selecting a plurality of shifting positions on the same transmission input shaft. SOLUTION: A controller 100 for an automatic transmission includes a control means for selecting the shifting position by driving a start clutch actuator and a shift fork actuator when shifting is requested, and for changing a speed by position-changing an odd shifting position start clutch 2 and an even shifting position start clutch 3. The control means operates the start clutch of the transmission input shaft of which the shifting position is neutral when stopped, rotates the transmission input shaft of the neutral state, compares an output shaft rotation speed of the engine with an output shaft rotation speed of the transmission of the neutral state, and detects abnormality of a transmission mechanism, when a deviation does not come within a prescribed value, within a prescribed time preset using an engine speed as a parameter.
