The machine (1) i.e. counterblow hammer (2), has upper and lower rams (4, 5) movable in a machine frame (3). Position measuring devices (P41, P51) are associated with the upper and the lower rams and form a measuring pair (MP1). The position measuring devices are arranged along a longitudinal axis (6) and rotated to each other around an angle for instance 180 degree centigrade with respect to the longitudinal axis of the deforming machine. The upper and the lower rams are moved along the longitudinal axis, and a reference mark is assigned to the upper ram.
