<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a maintenance liquid which suppresses a bad influence given to a recording head or delivered ink and is excellent in detergency. <P>SOLUTION: The maintenance liquid contains water and an organic solvent which is insoluble or hardly-soluble in water and shares 8 mass% or more to the total mass, at least while being at least a kind preferably chosen from the groups whose organic solvent concerned includes alcohols and ethers.
