PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricant applicator which is provided in an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a facsimile machine and a printer and capable of stabilizing application of lubricant, regardless of the amount of residues after transfer, even when a cleaning position is on the downstream side from a lubricant applying position in the moving direction of an image carrier and further, capable of adjusting a lubricant application amount per unit time, and to provide the image forming apparatus provided with such the lubricant applicator. SOLUTION: A lubricant applying member 47Y comes into contact with the image carrier 20Y to apply the lubricant to the image carrier 20Y, at the lubricant applying position TP on the downstream side from a transfer position NP where an image is transferred and on the upstream side from the cleaning position CP where the residues after transfer on the image carrier 20Y is removed, in the moving direction B1 of the image carrier 20Y. The lubricant applying member 47Y is brought into contact with and separated from the image carrier 20Y, to be separated from the image carrier 20Y, when the residues after transfer on the image carrier 20Y passes through the lubricant applying position TP.
