<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing member which is low in layout restriction and high in freedom of molding while favorably absorbing impact energy, and low in manufacturing cost, and a manufacturing method therefor. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The energy absorbing member 1 composed of a fiber-reinforced composite material which is formed into a plurality of layers (long fiber base materials) 11, 12 by cross-laminating long fibers 11a, 12a is characterized in that the member is formed in a waveform having a plurality of inflection points P at a cross section orthogonal to an energy input direction X, an angle difference θ between normal lines H, H at the adjacent inflection points P, P is 90 degrees or more, and an angle difference of a long fiber orientation between the cross-laminated adjacent layers 11, 12 is 70 degrees or more and 90 degrees or less.
