<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute encoder having a wide measurement area with respect to a non-measurement direction. <P>SOLUTION: The absolute encoder 10 includes a scale 11 in which a first area provided with an absolute pattern A with the X-axial direction as the arrangement direction of a unit pattern and a second area provided with an incremental pattern I which is paired with the absolute pattern A are arranged at different positions with respect to the X-axial direction as the measurement direction and a head 20 having an absolute signal detector 21<SB>1</SB>and an incremental signal detector 21<SB>2</SB>in the first and second areas, respectively, which face each other. The first and second areas are extended to the non-measurement direction (the Y-axial direction) to extend the both patterns A, I, thereby allowing the movable range of the head 20 in the non-measurement direction to be extended. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT</p> |
