PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a deposit-controlling agent having excellent properties for preventing attachment of the deposit, exhibiting sufficient wettability to papermaking tools and a papermaking apparatus having hydrophobicity and complicated structures, and preventing the deposit from attaching to the papermaking tools and the papermaking apparatus. SOLUTION: The external addition-type deposit-controlling agent includes 1-30 mass% of a polymer (A) of the following (a1) and/or (a2), and 1-30 mass% of a compound (B) represented by formula (1) [wherein, R is a 7-13C branched primary alcohol residue; m is the number of average mols of added EO (oxyethylene group) and 4-60; n is the number of average mols of added PO (oxypropylene group) and 0-20; with the proviso that the molar ratio of m to n is from 100:0 to 40:60]: (a1): a polymer constituted of one or more kinds of constituent units selected from a vinyl alcohol unit, a vinyl pyrrolidone unit and a (meth)acrylamide unit, and having a weight average molecular weight of 5,000-1,000,000; and (a2): a polymer obtained by reacting an amine with an epihalohydrin, and having a weight average molecular weight of 5,000-1,000,000.
