<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping device for a railway vehicle preventing deterioration in riding comfort by eliminating a shock generated accompanying the switch of the control of a damping damper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The damping device 10 of the railway vehicle 1 causes a control controller 6 to control the damping damper 5 provided between the vehicle body 2 and a truck 3 based on a detection signal from detection means 7, 29. The control controller 6 performs selection control of an unloading command to open an unloading valve 25 with respect to the damping damper 5, a large damping force onloading command for operating a pressure adjustment valve 23 so as to increase the damping force of the damping damper 5 by closing the unloading valve 25, and a small damping force onloading command for operating the pressure adjustment valve 23 so as to reduce the damping force of the damping damper 5 by closing the unloading valve.
