A method and a system for recovering a metal or metal alloy from scrap material, which contains further substances with a higher melting point than that of the metal or metal alloy, are provided, whereby the scrap material is first preheated at a temperature Tpw below the melting point Tmp of the metal or metal alloy to be recovered until the temperature within the metal or metal alloy to be recovered is higher than a predermined percentage of Tpw, followed by heating up the preheated scrap material to a temperature Trm within 100 s or less using the flame of a gas burner directed towards the scrap material, whereby Trm is higher than the melting point of the metal or metal alloy to be recovered and lower than the melting point of the further substances, and separating the metal or metal alloy from the other substances.
