An effluent stream (38) is treated with flocculant (40) to precipitate contaminant, and the resultant suspension is allowed to fall vertically under gravity through an extended inlet pipe (26) into a tank (2). At the pipe outlet (52) the flow contacts a deflection device (24), which promotes particle settling. Mud is removed through a bottom valve (12); clarified water discharges via overflow (18). Independent claims are also included for thickeners with extended inlet pipes and fluid deflection devices, and for adjustable position inlet pipes. Reynolds Numbers for the flow following flocculant addition are preferably high, e.g. 5000-10,000, and an in-line mixer arrangement (42) is included to promote turbulent mixing. The ascending liquid in the tank, at the level of the tank inlet (52), preferably does not exceed 2000. The fall pipe preferably has a flared outlet (46) which may be cup or bell shaped, and the deflection device surface preferably has spherical convex curvature. The clearance between the pipe outlet and impact device is preferably adjustable to produce a horizontal component velocity which is between 0.3-1.0 times the vertical downward flow velocity.
|
